As another example within the master plan, the university has made a commitment that all new construction be LEED-certified. Additional comments: Wayne State University seeks to maximize cost savings by consolidating equipment within departments and/or capitalizing on the ability to copy, fax and scan from single machines.  In addition, energy efficiencies may be obtained provided the multi function equipment uses less energy than the single pieces of equipment combined. The majority of the copiers purchased on campus are “Energy-Star” rated equipment. The University is environmentally concerned and encourages any solution(s) that would reduce our carbon footprint. The university operates a Main Campus/Medical Campus Shuttle as the University’s downtown campus spans 200 acres (including the medical campus). Wayne State offers a free campus shuttle service to all faculty, staff and students to decrease the amount of traffic on-campus associated with individuals traveling between buildings. Many students take classes on opposite sides of campus, and many faculty members teach classes on opposite sides of campus from where their offices are located, and are often tempted to drive from building to building especially during the winter months. The shuttle system provides an environmentally friendly alternative to “parking lot hopping” by providing a safe and convenient form of transportation. The shuttle has not only reduced on-campus vehicle traffic, but also provides a safe method of travel on campus, reduces green house emissions, saves individuals money in parking fees, and encourages travel between the DMC medical center and the central campus.

Description: The Parking & Transportation Department in conjunction with the Office of Business Operations is researching the possibility of implementing a car sharing program on campus for the Wayne State faculty/staff/students. The car sharing program allows individuals to utilize a vehicle available on campus anytime they want by registering in the program and making a reservation. Vehicles are located at various lots on campus and can be reserved minutes or weeks in advance for short errands of an hour or two, or weekend road trips. Also, the university is implementing a car sharing program utilizing some alternative fuel vehicles that will assist the campus community in reaching more destinations in an environmentally responsible manner.

Cycling, jogging, walking and rollerblading will be much easier with the new two-mile Midtown Loop. The pedestrian trail will follow existing street patterns along Kirby Street, John R Street, Canfield Street and Cass Avenue. Warren Avenue will serve as the central connector. The loop will link Wayne State and the Detroit Medical Center and adjoin greenways in surrounding neighborhoods. Eventually, the Midtown Loop will be connected to a larger greenway network linking New Center to Downtown and the Detroit River. The Midtown Loop features a widened walkway, improved pedestrian crossings and a variety of planting beds with native vegetation that separates pedestrians from cars.
