The University of Georgia has incorporated sustainability into the campus master and strategic plans. A committee has worked on a number of initiatives, including creating a sustainability office, beginning a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and starting a community garden. The university employs three full-time staff devoted to sustainability programs.
UGA has taken a variety of measures to reduce energy use, including the implementation of temperature setbacks and installation of energy management systems, economizers, heat recovery systems, lighting sensors, and efficient lighting. Heating and cooling systems are upgraded for efficiency, and energy audits inform community members of their energy use.
Dining services purchases local foods, including produce, milk, eggs, and baked goods. A variety of fish served on campus meets sustainable fisheries guidelines, and fair trade coffee is available. Pre- and postconsumer food scraps are composted at some meals, and used cooking oil is recycled.
All new construction projects must meet LEED Silver criteria, and the campus includes one LEED-certified building and eight buildings that meet LEED criteria. UGA has undertaken 16 projects to repurpose buildings for alternative use. Low-flow faucets and showerheads, advanced laundry technology, greywater systems, and building water metering are utilized to reduce water consumption.
An alliance of 27 sustainability-related student groups has worked on initiatives such as converting parking lots into green spaces, developing an environmental film series, and publishing the Living Green newsletter. A recent competition led to an 18 percent reduction in energy use and a 16 percent reduction in water use in the winning residence hall.
UGA subsidizes local public transportation and provides ride-matching, financial rewards, and preferable parking to carpoolers. The university runs one of the largest campus transit systems in the country. Each year, more than 9 million riders utilize the system to reach on- and off-campus destinations.
The University of Georgia Foundation makes a list of all holdings available online to trustees, senior administrators, and other select members of the school community. A list of asset allocation, mutual funds, fixed income holdings, and cash is available online to the public. The foundation does not make its shareholder voting record public.
The foundation aims to optimize investment returns, and the endowment is currently invested in renewable energy funds. The foundation also uses investment managers who consider environmental and sustainability factors.

The foundation is unable to vote proxies for the portion of the endowment that is invested in mutual funds or other commingled investment vehicles. For the remainder of funds the foundation asks that its investment managers handle the details of proxy voting.
