St. John's University is committed to sustainability through a formal policy as well as components of its master plan. The sustainability committee and the sustainability office implement and oversee environmental initiatives on campus. The university has a green purchasing policy that requires procurement of efficient appliances, electronics, and lighting, as well as eco-friendly cleaning products.
The university is committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent from 2007 levels by 2017. Energy efficiency technologies, such as economizers and gas-fired hydronic heating systems, have been installed on campus, and awareness campaigns encourage campus community members to conserve energy.
Dining services spends one-third of its food budget on local products and purchases organic produce. All shell eggs used on campus are cage free, and some chicken, pork, and milk products are hormone and antibiotic free. Seafood is purchased according to sustainability guidelines, and fair trade coffee is available at all dining locations on campus. The university offers discounts for the use of reusable mugs and composts preconsumer food scraps at all meals. St. John's recycles electronics in addition to traditional materials.
Fourteen buildings on campus meet LEED standards, and three spaces have been repurposed for alternative use. Water conservation technologies, such as water metering, efficient laundry technology, and low-flow faucets and showerheads, have been installed across campus. The university uses porous pavement and underground stormwater retention for stormwater management.
The Environmental Floor at St. John's is home to 100 students, and the university offers several student sustainability internships and eco-rep positions. Students participate in three annual competitions with the goal of reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and encouraging green living habits. Student groups, such as the Earth Club, advocate for environmental issues on campus.
St. John's offers on-campus shuttles and provides access to city public transportation. Bike racks have been installed around campus. Nearly half of the campus motor fleet is hybrid-electric or fully electric.
The university makes a list of all holdings, as well as a list of votes cast on proxy resolutions on a company-specific level, including the number of shares, available to trustees, senior administrators, and other select members of the school community.
The university aims to optimize investment returns and does not invest the endowment in on-campus sustainability projects, renewable energy funds, or community development loan funds.
The university provides its investment managers with general guidelines that determine its proxy votes. In select cases, student representatives deliberate and make recommendations on proxy votes.
