HEAG spearheaded the Dorm Energy Battle “Do it in the Dark” to encourage students to reduce energy use in the dorms. The winning dorm reduced it energy consumption by over 27%. Next year, HEAG will participate in a national Dorm Energy Battle.

HEAG has been working with the RTF to create and implement a comprehensive composting initiative on campus. The system will begin this summer. Also, during Green Week, HEAG sponsored a campaign with help from Bon Appetit (the dining service) called “Pledge to go Veg.” The initiative was an attempt to educate the Hamilton Community about the carbon footprint of food, especially meat and animal products.

HEAG worked with a local charity that runs a wildlife preserve to help replant old farmland with indigenous trees. The efforts sequester carbon and provide wildlife sanctuary, especially for migrating birds.

HEAG hosted two Green Week celebrations, one per semester. The primary objective is to educate the campus community about environmental issues in our local and global communities. We hosted movie events, speakers, campus clean-ups, a farmer’s market, and more. HEAG also worked hard this year to develop a larger presence on campus, and along Hamilton’s community service organization, was rated as the most respected club on campus. In the fall, HEAG brought the Sierra Club to campus to give a talk to a packed house called “Sex and Sustainability” that focused on population’s effects on global sustainability.

HEAG worked with the local public school system to create a recylcing program for the school system. We also worked at the elementary school in the spring to help plant flowers with the school's students.

 

Additional Comments

HEAG has worked in partnership with the Hamilton Recycling Task Force (RTF) on composting initiatives and waste reduction. The RTF spearheaded the highly successful Cram and Scram project that helps to collect and resell furniture, etc. left at school in May.

Up to 27% in the winning dorm. Saved over 94,000 kilowatt-hours in one month during the competition.

Increased exposure to the importance of recycling and waste reduction among campus community. The RTF held information sessions with different administrative and academic offices during the competition to increase awareness and education.

We held a survey during the day to get information from the campus about eating habits, education level, etc. We selected to random participants and gave them gift certificates to the school coffee shop.

We didn't serve meat that day in the two main dining halls, but beyond that, it is hard to tell.
