The Sustainability Task Force and its chair, the manager of sustainability, work to set sustainability goals for the university. Faculty and staff also have the option to participate in an eco-reps program. Bentley purchases Energy Star appliances whenever possible, and all cleaning products used on campus are Green Seal certified.
The university completes annual greenhouse gas emissions inventories and has committed to carbon neutrality by 2030, partially through the use of offsets. Energy efficiency efforts have included energy management system upgrades, electricity submetering, and the installation of LED and other energy-efficient lighting.
The university spends 15 percent of its annual food budget on local products, including vegetables, fruit, milk, and seafood. All milk served on campus is hormone and antibiotic free, and nearly all seafood purchases conform to sustainable fisheries guidelines. Discounts are offered for the use of reusable mugs, and fair trade coffee is served. Since 2008, all meals have been trayless. Bottled water has been replaced by bulk water stations at campus events. In addition to traditional materials, Bentley recycles electronics and fryer oil.
All new buildings must meet LEED Silver standards, at a minimum, and the university is currently awaiting Energy Star and LEED EB-certification on four buildings. To conserve water, Bentley has installed dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets, and uses weather-informed irrigation. The university uses retention ponds and vegetated swales to manage stormwater.
The Stratton Green Living House, which has been renovated with green materials and Energy Star appliances, opens in fall 2010 and houses 12 students committed to a sustainable lifestyle. A sustainability workshop has been included in orientation for incoming students and as part of the first-year seminar. Bentley offers 3 student internships to work on campus sustainability matters, and 30 eco-reps raise environmental awareness among their peers.
Bike racks are located outside every academic building, the student center, and athletic center. A free shuttle stops at several points around campus and connects students and faculty to a nearby mass transit stop. The university also runs a ride-share website to connect employees who wish to carpool. Twelve of the university's 53 vehicles are electric carts.
The university makes a list of all holdings available to trustees, senior administrators, and other select members of the school community. The university does not make public the shareholder voting record of its commingled funds.
The university aims to optimize investment returns, and the endowment is currently invested in on-campus projects and community development loan funds. Bentley is exploring, but not currently invested in renewable energy funds.
