Frequency of meetings: Every 2-3 months (for Sustainability Committee)
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: The VCU Sustainability Committee has calculated the carbon footprint for VCU. As an intern I have researched different topics including VCU’s endowments, green fees, on-campus and off-campus composting, and sustainability with residential life and housing. With my job as a resident assistant, I work in a resident hall that has a learning curriculum focused around sustainability. It is my job to participate and create programs and bulletin boards to help residents learn what sustainability is, how it is important and how they can live their lives in a more environmentally aware state of mind.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: The VCU Sustainability Committee is now working on hiring a consultant to help plan the VCU carbon neutrality plan that is to be finished by May of 2010. I am now on the committee, serving as a student representative and hope to have an influence on how VCU plans on becoming a more sustainable and green campus in the years to come. As a resident assistant, the resident hall I am working for is going on its second year with the sustainability curriculum. I feel like we will know which kinks to work out dealing with being even more sustainable then we were before and making the programs and bulletin boards even more interesting and influential.
