The Sustainability Working Group and the Office of Sustainability are currently drafting the university's first comprehensive sustainable campus community plan. A green purchasing policy for the campus mandates the purchase of Energy Star appliances and electronics, environmentally preferable paper products, and green cleaning products for most of the campus.

The university uses student fees to purchase renewable energy credits for 100 percent of electricity used in residence halls and the University Center, offsetting 37 percent of campus-wide energy use. The university has completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

Dining services spends 12 percent of its total food budget on local and organic foods, including locally raised, grass-fed bison, and hormone- and antibiotic-free milk. Fair trade coffee is available at some campus eateries, and discounts are offered for bringing a reusable mug. Trayless dining was introduced in 2008 throughout the dining complex.

Green Building

UWRF uses the LEED criteria as guidelines for all new construction projects. Renovations in four buildings have met LEED-EB standards. Low-flow plumbing fixtures, including toilets, faucets, showerheads, and urinals, have been installed throughout campus.

Student Involvement

The Earth Conscious Organization (ECO Club) works closely with the sustainability office and organizes student events focused on sustainability. Campus sustainability initiatives are emphasized at new-student orientation. Students reduced electricity use in residence halls by 19 percent during a recent competition.

UWRF integrates pedestrian- and bike-friendly design into campus planning and limits the number of vehicles allowed in the center of campus. The university fleet includes three electric vehicles.
