College Sustainability Report Card 2010

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh recently established a sustainability council and unveiled a campus sustainability plan with several goals to reduce energy and water consumption. Custodial services uses environmentally preferable cleaning products. As per state law, paper products and some appliances purchased by the university contain recycled content.

The university has completed its first greenhouse gas emissions inventory and has set goals to reduce fossil fuel consumption for heating to 50 percent below 2000 levels by 2012. UW-Oshkosh has also committed to reducing electrical consumption to 20 percent below 2005 levels by 2012, as well as lowering water consumption by 50 percent from 2000 levels by 2012. The university purchases 11 percent of its energy from renewable sources. An engineering analysis of the campus heating plant is currently underway.

In 2008, the university declared itself to be a Fair Trade University, actively promoting fair trade products through campus marketing campaigns. Dining services purchases some local products and cage-free eggs. A recycling program is in place for traditional materials and some electronic waste.

The university has committed to constructing all new buildings to LEED Silver standards. Recent construction has met these guidelines, as did construction of the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

The Student Environmental Action Coalition is the primary student group addressing campus sustainability issues. Students also have the opportunity to work at an on-campus garden through the UW-Oshkosh Community Gardens Club.

UW-Oshkosh provides students, faculty, and staff with an unlimited bus pass and is aiming to reduce automobile trips to campus by 20 percent by 2012. The campus has begun phasing out gasoline-only vehicles and has recently installed new bike racks around campus.
