Your answer: (b) The University’s investment policy includes a socially responsible portion of the policy.  This socially responsible portion of the investment policy provides general guiding principles with respect to evaluating investment opportunities, including: sacredness of life, human rights, nondiscrimination and equal opportunity, weapons of mass destruction, and the environment.  We provide this policy to our active investment managers.  Managers that do have an active screening process, such as Doge & Cox, identify any environmental or social issues that may come up through their database screening and bring them to the University’s attention.  For some environmental or social issues, the University may determine that shareholder activism may be the best way to bring about changes in corporate policies.  For example, the University of San Francisco participated in shareholder activism this year by co-filing with several other Jesuit insitutions to incorporate a human rights resolution in the 2009 Chevron proxy.
