The UMass Dartmouth Office of Campus and Community Sustainability employs a full-time director and three part-time staff. The Sustainability Assessment Committee is developing a year-long review of the campus that will help shape the university's carbon reduction plan. Green procurement guidelines are used for all purchases excluding food.

Climate Change & Energy

Since 2008, UMass Dartmouth has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8 percent. The university installed a meteorological tower to measure the potential for wind energy production on campus. The campus has saved $650,000 in energy costs since July 2008 and entered into an infrastructure performance contract to reduce emissions 40 percent by 2020.

Food & Recycling

UMass Dartmouth composts preconsumer food scraps at 90 percent of its dining facilities and is currently expanding its composting program. All dining facilities are trayless. The university purchases locally grown apples, pears, and strawberries through its distributor, in addition to some vegetables. The university has a traditional recycling program and repurposes its landscaping waste.

Green Building

As a public institution, the university is committed to meeting Massachusetts LEED Plus standards for all new buildings. Six frequently used bathrooms have been remodeled with energy-efficient plumbing, recycled materials in walls and partitions, and antimicrobial flooring.

Student Involvement

Tours and information sessions on sustainability at UMass Dartmouth are given at new-student orientation. Students involved in the Green Navigators program promote sustainability in residence halls and coordinate an on-campus farmers market. Several paid internships based at the sustainability office are held by students. There are three student groups on campus that address environmental issues.

The university offers discounted parking passes and preferred parking spaces to carpoolers. All campus community members have free access to local public transportation, and the DART van service makes continuous trips around campus.
