We have begun to work with the community members in a much larger degree thru the start of the community garden. This year was a great year for DU-ET, and the club become more well known throughout the campus.

Name of organization: University of Denver Environmental Team
Number of active members: 20
Website:  www.projectduet.com
Date of last meeting: May 18th, 2009
Frequency of meetings: Weekly, or more frequently as needed
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:
•       Started a Community Garden on campus. DUET members worked side by side with community members and Denver Urban Gardens (a non-profit in Denver) from planning stages to planting plots.
•       Worked with Sodexo (campus food provider) to limit tray usage in campus cafeterias under the “Trayless Tuesdays” initiative.
•       Participated in RecycleMania, national waste reduction competition
•       Increased the amount of Local and Organic foods used by Sodexo on our campus
•       Started the process of creating a campus wide Composting program by collaborating with school facilities and with a potential composting provider.
•       Worked on improving recycling: location of bins, including outdoors, removal of trash bins
•       No Bottled Water Week: provided REUSABLE water bottles with “nutrition facts” about why single-use bottled water is bad for people and bad for the environment.  Students also pressured Sodexo to pull all single-use bottles from the shelves on Earth Day 2009.
•       Supported an innovative EcoCup program where a person can borrow a mug from a campus coffee shop and return it to any other coffee shop location to be washed, thus reducing the number of paper coffee cups we throw away

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: All were new initiatives since August 2008

•       Community Garden: Organized, built, held press conference and opening, the garden is currently growing!
•       Trayless Tuesdays: raised awareness in dining halls of wasteful water and energy usage
•       RecycleMania: participated, although we struggled with getting measurements
•       Composting: pilot program to start in first year residence hall in the fall, still working on how to administer program
•       Recycling: outdoor recycling to be installed this summer, achieved much wider distribution of bins
•       No bottled water week: great success, we gave away over 1000 water bottles which are being used all over campus. The campaign raised awareness about wastefulness.
•       EcoCup: still working out the details, but Sodexho has agreed to the program and we are testing mugs which can survive industrial dishwashers
