Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Since August 2008 we have opened a community bicycle shop on campus which provides a space for members of the university community to practice the art of bicycle maintenance. We have also launched a bike library, a program aimed at lending bikes to members of the university community. Key issues addressed are environmental sustainability, the promotion of healthy lifestyles and fostering a cycling community and culture on campus.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: Since August the utilization of the shop has grown to 400 members with the shop being open on average 20 hours per week. The library currently consists of 30 bicycles and continues to grow to our goal of 70 bikes. We have also hosted a number of events in order to foster a cycling community including many bikes rides, bike-in movie nights, and volunteer appreciation parties. We have also begun to set up bike share programs at various locations around the campus.

[ x]  Yes. Please describe: Campus sustainability is a key issue for our organization and is attended to by our board of core volunteers. We have worked also with many departments in the university to promote initiative which are related to sustainability. These initiatives include, for example, a Commuter Challenge, which promotes alternative transportation, and a design charrette which sought to provide a vision and recommendations to improve the cycling infrastructure on campus.

1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.
Name of organization: University of Calgary Communal Garden
Number of active members: 8

Date of last meeting: May 30, but with email communication regularily since then and some informal work evenings.
Frequency of meetings: Work nights- once a week, planning meetings- once every 2 months approximately.
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Defining the vision and operation of the communal garden, ensuring ongoing care and maintenance of the garden, securing funding for the garden and coordinating the donation of produce in the community as well as further volunteer recruitment. This project only commenced in April 2009.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: Overall mission statement and intent of garden determined in April 2009, schedule for watering and planting achieved and is sucessfully ongoing, some funding was secured but an application for more funding will be completed by the end of August 2009, produce is being donated in the community weekly as of July 6th. Regular work sessions and meetings have not been occurring as often as planned. Volunteer recruitment has so far been fairly unsuccessful.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Project overview - Composting pilot project designed to collect data on the feasability of pre-consumer and post-consumer organic waste collection on campus.

Issues addressed - solid waste diversion, student awareness about composting, feasability of campus-wide composting program

Total waste composted: 14,918.7 lbs

Launch event was held in January, 2009. Approximately 200 students participated.

Results were presented to the university (Operations & Maintenance department), who will now be doing campus-wide composting starting in September, 2009.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:

WUSC is a social justice club. Our main ongoing program is the Student Refugee Program, which sponsors one student from a refugee camp to continue their studies at the UofC. We also do monthly fair trade sales, as well as one-time events for fundraising or to raise awareness about different issues. This year we participated in Stand Up Take Action (a Make Poverty History event), Gulu Walk (raising money for children in Uganda), a food drive for the campus food bank, bake sales to raise money for bicycle-ambulances for those in Malawi living with HIV/AIDS (Bike for AIDS program), and two awareness events about refugee life.

Key issues addressed: assisting a refugee student adapt to life in Canada, awareness about refugee issues, availability of fair trade products on campus, awareness about fair trade, the Millenium Development Goals, and HIV/AIDS.

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:

Sponsored one student from a refugee camp. We had about 100-250 people engaged for each awareness event. Raised $200 for Gulu Walk, $553 for the campus food bank, $500 for Bike for AIDS.

Recycling Program – increased advertizing and number of collection locations for recycling pickup

Decrease Styrofoam – researched alternatives and talked to several organizations including SU about their Styrofoam usage but no changes in policy have resulted from our efforts yet.

Increase active member body: A noticeable increase in members attending our members meetings and participating in our small initiatives was seen outside of the club exec was noticed.  Events included silk screening, Captain planet watching, and action on EcoClub campaigns.

Weekly e-mails to members, Displays on campus, Eco-Club board updates, eco-rewards (handouts of mugs, recycled pencils, cupons for eco-friendly actions etc.)

            In the past the EcoClub has been a part of many projects including lobbying for recycling bins on campus, environmental awareness components to our U of C orientation week, raising money to get one of the Computer labs on Campus powered by wind, and protesting oil company development in the habitat of the dwindling little smokey caribou herd. Our organization has also planned fun social events to bring the campus environmental community together such as a camping trip to view the impacts of oil development and exploration in Alberta, cross country skiing, and environmental movie series.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: The need to educate the community on the benefits and possibilities of solar power while providing a hands on learning experience for undergraduate students. This is done through the design, development and racing of a solar powered car. We are currently working on producing our third car.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: Minimum average of two events per month (attending schools and giving presentations on solar power and our car, attending large community events and sharing what we are doing with members of the community). We are currently in the development stage of our third car, with plans to race in the 2010 North American Solar Challenge and 2011 World Solar Challenge.
