1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Seeking President Diver?s signature on American College and University Presidents? Climate Commitment or similar Reed College Sustainability Commitment; seeking creation of Sustainability Coordinator position; seeking college purchase of renewable electricity.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: In fall 2008 student election, students approved an initiative setting aside 2% of student body funds for the purchase of renewable electricity. Beginning fall 2009 these funds will be matched by a contribution from the President and together shifted to a joint fund for a competitive campus sustainability grant program. Student Senate has approved Sustainability Commitment and over 400 have signed petition for its adoption by the College.

#1 - Name of competition: The Power Struggle
Year initiated: 2006
Frequency of competition: Annual
Participants: College residence halls.
Incentives: Pies, ice cream, unique gifts from local Goodwill center.
Goal of competition: Reduce electrical consumption in residence halls.
Percent of energy/water/waste reduced: By winning dorm, approximately 14%.
Lasting effects of competition: Increased awareness of energy consumption; distribution of CFL bulbs.

3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[X] Yes. Please describe: During spring 2009, a group of Senators met regularly to aid the planning of the sustainability grant program.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school: Each semester, Greenboard and Facilities Services organize Canyon Day, in which students, neighbors and others work to uproot invasive species and plant native vegetation in the Reed College Canyon. In the past, Greenboard members have successfully pushed Facilities Services to begin composting food waste from the cafeteria, and initiated the formation of the Sustainability Committee and Environmental Policy Statement.

The Reed Sustainable Food Project has established a small farm on campus and began selling produce to the cafeteria in spring 2009. URL: http://reedsustainablefoodproject.blogspot.com/
The Reed College Bike Co-op is supported by student body funds; it is open daily when college is in session for no-cost maintenance and repairs, and with Student Services it hosts the annual bicycle lottery program.

Greenboard members organize with the Cascade Climate Network (the Northwest?s regional student environmental organization) and Sierra Student Coalition.
