Radford's sustainability policy has been approved by the university's Sustainability Steering Committee and is awaiting approval by the president and board of trustees. The university employs three full-time sustainability staff, and a sustainability office was created in 2008. The university purchases exclusively Energy Star appliances and incorporates EPEAT ratings into product evaluations when making purchasing decisions.

Climate Change & Energy

Radford will have completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory by fall 2009, at which point the university will develop a climate action plan. Radford uses a building automation system to monitor and control building operations and has installed occupancy sensors, variable frequency drives, and steam-driven pumps, as well as performed lighting retrofits. Several campus buildings, including the McConnell Library, have been retrocommissioned.

Food & Recycling
A 
Radford spends 16 percent of its food budget on locally produced items including milk, ice cream, and bread. Dining services offers exclusively cage-free shell eggs, as well as hormone- and antibiotic-free milk, pork, and chicken. The university's main dining facility will begin composting pre- and postconsumer waste in fall 2009; a pilot composting program was held the previous spring. Dining facilities have been trayless since April 2008.

Green Building

The Sustainability Steering Committee has approved a green building policy that is now awaiting approval from the president and board of trustees. The renovated Floyd and Norwood halls have been Energy Star-labeled. The university has installed some low-flow showerheads and aerators, waterless urinals, and efficient washing machines to reduce its water consumption.

Student Involvement
A 
Approximately 100 incoming freshmen have signed up to live in RU Greenhouses, Radford's sustainable living communities. The students will be trying out new housekeeping products and provide data about energy and water use as compared to other halls. The university's sustainability office offers student internships. The Environmental Club works to educate the campus community about issues related to environmental sustainability.

Transportation

Radford has offered a vehicle-sharing program since the 1990s. A shuttle provides free transportation around campus and to local destinations. The university campus fleet includes electric and biodiesel vehicles.
