STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.

Name of organization: Earth Matters

Number of active members: Approx. 30-40

Website: http://www.nyu.edu/clubs/earthmatters/index.shtml

Date of last meeting: 4/28/2009

Frequency of meetings: Weekly

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:

Earth Matters serves as a gateway club for students interested in getting involved in making NYU a more sustainable university.  We provide a space for students interested in environmental advocacy to gather and network, while directing students to any of the many NYU sustainability initiatives that they might be interested in.  For example, if a student has an interest in alternative energy, we will direct that student to NYU’s Sustainability Task Force, where they can volunteer with its energy working group.  If a students are interested in biking advocacy, we can connect them with the students who are creating NYU’s bike sharing program.

In the 2008-2009 academic year, we focused largely on:

-          Water bottle and other waste reduction campaigns

-          Post-Apocalypse Prom Fall 2008(raised money for Sustainable South Bronx)

-          Earth Week 2009, which included 25+ events for a variety of environmental causes. For list of all the events, please visit; http://www.nyu.edu/sustainability/get.involved/earth.week.html

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:

The first semester of this year (Fall 2008) we divided into subcommittees to focus on particular issues.  The groups included a PowerVote group (http://www.powervote.org/), an environmental justice group, a community service group, and a water bottle reduction group.  All but the environmental justice group implemented at least one program over the course of the fall semester. Additionally, the Post Apocalypse Prom was a great success, engaging community member in an innovative way to discuss environmental issues.

In the Spring semester,Earth Week 2009 was our busiest Earth Week thus far at NYU, with approximately thirty different events catering to all sectors of the NYU community as well as the New York City community at large.

Earth Matters has been responsible for forming the 'Earth Week Planning Committee' every spring semester to organize NYU Earth Week, which has almost branched out into an entire month of events to raise awareness for a variety of environmental issues through hundreds of different activities.

Because NYU is weaved into the fabric of New York’s Greenwich Village area, Earth Matters has a unique approach to spreading sustainability that focuses on bolstering city organizations while engaging local community members.  Earth Matters partners with a number of New York City non-profits to provide a space for speaking events.  In Fall 2008 we hosted the Wetlands Activism Collective’s panel discussion on indigenous rights and environmental activism in developing nations.  We have a recurrent relationship with the Sierra Club to show environmental documentaries at no cost to our club.  At all speaking and film events, Earth Matters aims to reach out to not only NYU’s student body, but also members of the surrounding community.

Finally, Earth Matters has also been responsible for organizing camping trips, river/park clean-ups, and different environmental activism demonstrations on campus.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:

Our goal for the 2008-2009 Academic Year was to demonstrate that sustainability is not a narrow interest area, but has a connection to every discipline taught at the NYU Wagner School of Public Service.

We acted on this goal by co-sponsoring events with other students groups at NYU, including groups focused on transportation, international issues, health, urban planning, community service, public policy, and law.  We also want to make sure our members know about other sustainability-focused events taking place throughout the University, New York City, and occasionally, the world, so we send out a weekly e-newsletter, the WEPA Weekly, that provides a listing of such activities.

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:

We were able to reach an audience that does not focus on sustainability as a part of their programming, so we believe that more Wagner students, faculty, and staff are considering the role the environment plays in their area of interest. We provided the WEPA Weekly to the members of our listserv, which is more than 200 people, nearly every week that school was in session.
