STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:
* "Trayless Campaign," reducing food and water waste in dining commons;
* Campus Creek Restoration;
* Conducted Educational Dorm Hall Presentations, educating campus residents on Recyclemania 2009;
* and Planned and Coordinated Earth Week 2009
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:
* Received nearly 200 student signatures of support for the Trayless Campaign and Founders Dining Commons no longer distributes trays for students to use at meal times
* In the past year we have hosted three Saturday Leona Creek Cleanup and Planting Days open also to the greater Bay Area community, attended by approx. 45 people each
* Gave hour-long presentations, including group discussions, to 4 out of 7 of the major dormitories on campus and to Freshman class in Mills Life 101 Series
* Recylemania competition commitments to the Waste-Minimization category included:
o Reducing off-campus bulk-mail, and got approx. 60 people who pledged to create an account with the Direct Marketing Association through www.DMAchoice.com, to personalize what offers they receive in their mailbox
o Promoting and maintaining our Reuse Depot, a campus-wide donation drop-off center/ free store
o Offering discounts to campus cafe for people using own reusable mugs/ diningware
* Earth Week 2009 included:
o Sustainable methods, where minimal paper was used to promote events, instead murals were created on all classroom chalkboards and posters were made from recycled paper bags
o Zero-Waste Spring Fling Festival, where all materials used were either recyclable or compostable, which has set the precedent for the college to implement a Zero-Waste policy for future campus-wide events
o A lunch-time talk on Earth Day: "Environmentalism and Social Justice: Exploring Connections through Vision Flags" with Founders of Earth House Leadership Center, Carl Anthony and Paloma Pavel
o Mills College 1st Earth Day Film Fest, coordinated primarily by student, Heather Altherr
o Community Garden Day, where all of the campus community was invited to garden and have a solar-cooked lunch

Incentives: Participants and Winners Awarded with Prizes, such as Organic Cotton Sheets, Canvas Tote Bags, and/or VIP Passes to Mills College Earth Day Film Fest
Goal of competition: To promote and recognize sustainable living practices in the dorms

Lasting effects of competition: All participants and their achievements are catalogued in "Green Living" Portfolio for reference at the Sustainability Center, which is shown at all major Earth C.O.R.P.S. presentations

SUSTAINABILITY IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT
3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[X] Yes. Please describe:
Associated Students of Mills College has a Sustainability Senator who brings up environmental issues when planning and voting on where to allocate student government's funds and support, also requiring student organizations to submit a proposal on how they will mitigate their waste-streams when requesting funding for club-sponsored events.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school:
* Hosted grand opening of campus Sustainability Center;
* Attended and had two student representatives present at the student panel for California Student Sustainability Coalition Convergence Oct. 2008;
* Raised funding to take students on a field trip to see the Yuba River Salmon Run;
* Mills Students for AC Transit Passes successfully contracted with local public transit system to obtain a pilot program of year-long bus passes for every undergraduate student;
* Greenhouse Gas Emissions Survey conducted for the nationwide American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment
