College Sustainability Report Card 2010

The sustainability committee at Mills College, which includes students, faculty, administration, and staff, has submitted a mission statement and policy to the board of trustees for approval. The Sustainability Center employs a part-time coordinator and maintains a website detailing green initiatives.

The Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Building has a 30-kilowatt photovoltaic system on its roof that provides roughly one-third of the building's electricity. The college has committed to climate neutrality.

As part of the Farm to Fork program, at least 20 percent of the food served in Mills' dining facilities is from within a 150-mile radius. Dining services serves cage-free eggs, hormone-free milk, and seafood that meets Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch guidelines. Pre- and postconsumer waste is composted in all facilities, and the college recycles 60 percent of its waste stream.

Mills College has committed to LEED Silver certification for all new construction and major renovations. The Natural Science Building has achieved LEED Platinum certification, and the Graduate School of Business is anticipating LEED Gold certification. Low-flow showerheads have been installed in all buildings on campus.

The student group Earth C.O.R.P.S. ran a successful campaign to eliminate trays in dining commons. New-student orientation includes tours of sustainability-related resources on campus. The Larsen House Co-op houses students dedicated to raising environmental awareness on campus and is adjacent to the botanical garden.

Mills runs a shuttle to the University of California at Berkeley and to city transit stations. After a recently passed referendum, public bus passes will be available to students at a discounted rate. The college runs an online carpooling system and offers preferred parking for alternative-fuel or hybrid vehicles.

The college has no known policy of disclosure of endowment holdings or its shareholder voting record.

The college aims to optimize investment return and has not made any public statements about investigating or investing in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
