College Sustainability Report Card 2010

Loyola College in Maryland is forming a sustainability committee in fall 2009 to be comprised of students, faculty, and administrators. The college hired a full-time sustainability coordinator and is developing a green initiatives website.

The college is in the process of completing a greenhouse gas inventory for fall 2009. A geothermal system heats and cools one residence hall, and two rooftop solar panels were installed in summer 2008. The college is performing efficiency upgrades with Energy Star appliances, LED lighting, and refined HVAC control systems.

Dining services purchases produce, dairy, and seafood from local sources. Loyola's dining halls are trayless, and the single-stream recycling program diverts 36 percent of the campus's recyclable waste. The Good Stuff Campaign, a move-out donation drive, collects items for 11 community organizations.

A green residence hall, completed in 2007, features recycled metal beams, a green roof, and geothermal heating and cooling. The college has no known green building policy. All restrooms are equipped with motion sensor lighting. Low-flow faucets and showerheads and Energy Star laundry machines have been installed in residence halls.

The student groups Environmental Action Club, Roots and Shoots, and Justice Club are actively involved with sustainability issues and are working to actively engage and inform the college community as to the importance of environmental stewardship. Students organized Sustainability Week, which featured a farmers market and a fair trade coffee house. New-student orientation includes an information session on campus sustainability.

The college's motor pool includes electric and hybrid vehicles. A free shuttle services all residence halls and main campus buildings and connects to the Baltimore light rail system. Loyola partners with a hybrid-only taxi service to provide additional transportation resources.

The college has no known policy of disclosure of endowment holdings or its shareholder voting record.

The college aims to optimize investment return and has not made any public statements about investigating or investing in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
