Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Power Vote campaign, Eco-Olympics, compost on campus,

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: During the Power Vote campaign we collected pledges to vote for environmentally minded candidates from half the student body. The school agreed to increase the number of compost pickups at Lewis and Clark to accommodate larger amounts of compost. SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES AND COMPETITIONS

Participants: around 1,000 people

Incentives: The dorm that reduced energy consumption the most had a pizza party with the college president

Goal of competition: To reduce campus energy use and reach out to everyone on campus. This year we did not set an energy-reduction goal because it was the competition’s first year.

Percent of energy/water/waste reduced: 10,068 KWH when compared to our base week

Lasting effects of competition:

  • Created a process and network that will form the basis for next year’s Eco-Olympics
  •  Exchanged energy-efficient light bulbs for regular ones in dorm rooms, loaned out energy readers, handed out energy-saving tips
  •  Spoke face-to-face with nearly every student on campus about saving energy
  • Environmentally-themed events throughout the month included a recycling workshop with representatives from the local recycling company, the school, and the city of Portland
