STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.
Name of organization: Resource and Environmental Management Program (REMP)
Number of active members: 5-10 “Resource Reps” and a number of student volunteers
Website: www.ithaca.edu/remp
Date of last meeting: May 7th
Frequency of meetings: Meetings are held weekly while classes are in session.
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:
REMP deals largely with recycling and compost on campus, both in terms of education and actual resource management. Our major issues this year were Recyclemania, Spot-a-Mug, Take it or Leave It (TIOLI), Zero Waste Events, and we are currently working to educate incoming students about sustainability during summer orientation.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:
In the 2009 Recyclemania competition, Ithaca College ranked 5th in New York State in the Grand Champion competition and 10th in the nation in the Targeted Material: Food Service Organics competition. Resource Reps have successfully continued passing out coupons for free coffee or tea to individuals spotted on campus with a reusable mug. The campaign for the use of reusable mugs continues to be a success and will be continued next year. This year REMP held our annual Take it or Leave it yard sale, in which dorm items (chairs, lamps, decorations, hangers, etc.) donated by students the previous year are resold to students in an effort to both prevent those items from being thrown away, and to reduce the amount of new items being purchased. At the end of the 08-09 academic year, we again collected items from students, but this year we collaborated with the Finger Lakes Reuse Center, to whom we donated office supplies, and the Good Sheppard Catholic Community, to whom we donated clothes for migrant workers. Resource Reps this year also staffed a number of events this year in order to educate event-goers about what is compostable or recyclable, and to actively prevent contamination of the campus’s compost stream. REMP also holds a table at all orientation events in order to educate incoming students and their parents about sustainability efforts on campus.
