With the publication of the College Sustainability Report Card 2010, more than 1,100 school survey responses from over 300 institutions are now available online. In total, these surveys offer more than 10,000 pages of data collected from colleges and universities during the summer of 2009 . STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.

Frequency of meetings: Once in two weeks

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:

   1. Development of a plan to install solar powered electrical system in an elementary school in Pignon, Haiti

   2. Fund-raising for the proposed amount of the project

   3. Training student volunteers to install this electrical system in Haiti.

   4. Installation to be accomplished mid-august 2009

   5. Work in collaboration with other student organizations like Haiti Outreach to fund-raise for the project.

   6. Efforts were undertaken under the leadership of various student leaders of EWB through August 2009.

 

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:

   1. The Pignon elementary school project was taken from its concept/planning stage to implementation stage in the course of one year following all the steps as mentioned above.

SUSTAINABILITY IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT

3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[ X ]  Yes. Please describe: The Student Sustainability Committee of Student Government Association (SGA) works in collaboration with office of Sustainability on campus to carry out green initiatives at IIT. The Committee was formed under the leadership of Stacy Morton, who was the former V.P. of Student life and Head of the sustainability committee which has been passed over to me as the new V.P. Some of the major achievements and involvements of the committee include

    * conducting an end of the year move out recycling and clothing drive in collaboration with office of sustainability and Salvation Army

    * having students from SGA attend sustainability forums held by the office of sustainability on campus (office of sustainability came out with its plan for the campus at one of these forums)

    * Work in collaboration with the food committee and cafeteria in an effort to introduce an organic meal plan at the cafeteria.

    * Celebrate earth Day at the BOG in an effort to spread awareness amongst students

 

OTHER ACTIVITIES

4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school:

   1.  I undertook a sustainability network and outreach trip in June-August 2009. The outreach effort involved meeting student leaders from various campuses who were involved with green efforts on their respective campus. The goals of this outreach effort were as follows:-

          * To share and learn from student leaders of what had been accomplished on their campus in terms of their going green effort and where they/or us stand with respect to each other

          * To connect student leaders we meet along through a common forum/blog in an effort to foster interaction and exchange of ideas between student leaders of different college campuses.

          * This student initiated outreach program was undertaken with the help of the student travel club on campus.

          * Successful outreach meetings were conducted with student leaders at Stanford University, University of Florida, Texas A&M University, University of Northern Colorado.

          * Three students from our campus Patrick Choi, Kurt Ehlert and me (Purvag Patel) took part in this outreach exercise.
