Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: A theme that seemed to stand out this past year in particular is that of Environmental Stewardship.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: In addition to our usual reforestation activities on campus, D.E.A.L. raised awareness of native species preservation issues through outdoor activities such as informational hikes. D.E.A.L., in cooperation with Drew University’s Volunteer Resource Center, also adopted of a trail from the Morris County Park Service that we will be responsible for over the course of the next three years.

4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school:

Fern Fest: Drew University’s reforestation project and Earth Day celebration. A day of environmental workshops, live student bands, planting ferns and other native plants on Drew’s campus, educating other students about the environment and getting them involved in important environmental issues.

Fair Trade Coffee House: An evening of students’ music, poetry, and stories, while serving fair trade coffee and educating the campus about fair trade products.

Alternative Gift Market: Before the winter holidays, we organize an event where students can sell their own handmade crafts, art, jewelry, etc. Often the materials students use for these projects are recycled materials, and the emphasis on the event is that we can buy local gifts and support individuals who are making a positive impact on our world.

Campus Wide Clean-Ups: Each semester, we organize a clean-up day on campus where we get both our club members and students involved in cleaning up the left behind trash on campus. This is to encourage students to recognize how they can do little things to make a big difference.
5) Please list and briefly describe any other student-run organizations related to campus sustainability at your school, and provide URLs if available (e.g., student groups; student government committees; student-run food co-ops, gardens/farms, bike co-ops) and provide contact information of the student leaders, if possible: The Earth House is one of 6 theme houses at Drew University and allows its residents to live an ecologically-observant lifestyle. Residents are required to engage in a certain amount of programming each year and will often work together with D.E.A.L. to put on events promoting awareness of environmental issues.
