STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role:
DEAL strives to instill a sense of environmental stewardship and responsible global citizenship by engaging our community, providing information, making personal lifestyle changes, and taking action to create change.

Name of organization: Drake Environmental Action League (DEAL)
Number of active members: 35
Website: NA
Date of last meeting:  May 6, 2009
Frequency of meetings: weekly
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008:  We worked with Sodexo Campus Services, our campus food provider.  With our help, the Drake campus started a “Trayless Thursday” initiative in dining facilities, consumed less Styrofoam, and provided more local and organic products to the student body.  In the fall, we hosted Earth Week, a week of events that focused on conservation, sustainability, and political action.  DEAL also hosted the first annual Iowa Earth Summit, which created the Iowa Environmental Student Coalition.  Ten DEAL members participated in an alternative spring break trip through Urban Ambassadors to Catalina Island to do conservation work and help build an education center.

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008:  Sodexo has replaced almost all Styrofoam cups with paper cups, one of the two dining centers is trayless once a week, and our campus shops and dining facilities use and sell more local and organic products.  The Iowa Environmental Student Coalition is getting organized and deciding what issues to address during the upcoming academic year.  To follow up with the spring break trip, DEAL made a commitment to help Urban Ambassadors with work in Des Moines and will be helping to improve the trails in the city.
