Freshman Hall Talks

Each talk had script and a recycling bin for each freshman dorm room.  Power Vote

Around 15% of student body signed pledges, very good compared to most schools.

Do It In The Dark

On top of the competition, students camped outside for two nights to raise awareness about the competition and live without electricity.

Keith Onsdorff talk

Environmental lawyer and Davidson alum contacted us through Dr. Paradise (Biology).  We planned a lunch-time discussion with him at the Career Services office about his experience in environmental law.

Paul Roberts lecture

Helped sponsor this year’s speaker.

Green Ball

A contra dance benefitting the Davidson Lands Conservancy. It includes a silent auction with donated, sustainable items, a live band, refreshments and desserts using as many local and organic ingredients as possible, a caller, a fun time, and beautiful decorations. Tickets are sold and all the profits are directly for the non-profit organization in our town trying to protect the land from excessive development and help local farmers. This year, we raised over $2,000. All expenses for the Green Ball are covered by our budget (we pay for the band, the food, etc).

Presentation – “The Cost of Beauty: Toxic Chemicals in your Cosmetics” (G.W.)

Lindsay approached EAC for help in advertising a presentation that she created herself about unknown toxic ingredients in common cosmetic products.

Get Trashed

To raise awareness about RecycleMania,  a few EAC members carried around campus their own non-recyclable waste for an entire week.  They also created a stationary display to show the amount of waste (recyclable and non-recyclable) an average Davidson student produces.

Earth Hour event

We organized a nighttime, outdoor showing of WALL-E on Belk Lawn, which played during Earth Hour so as to attract people away from using energy in their rooms.  The title of the event was “Blackout Belk Lawn.”  We secured the use of DO’s bike-generator to power the DVD player.

Cliffside rally

A group of students attended the official April 20 protest of Duke Energy’s Cliffside Plant construction.

5) Please list and briefly describe any other student-run organizations related to campus sustainability at your school, and provide URLs if available (e.g., student groups; student government committees; student-run food co-ops, gardens/farms, bike co-ops) and provide contact information of the student leaders, if possible:
1. GreenPrint

Over the course of this year, GreenPrint created various "Art for Awareness" campaigns which were seen across campus, serving as a reminder to influence student behavior in order to reduce consumption and waste of paper, utilities, recycling and edibles (P.U.R.E.). Exhibits included oil-filled water bottles, model size planes filled with aluminum cans, and cars parked in the middle of campus with gas consumption statistics written on the windows.

2. Local Meal in a Box

A CSA initiated by a student on campus, Kristina Johnson, in partner with a Davidson alum who is actively involved in the farming community. It provided students and faculty the chance to have all the ingredients for one meal  (4 servings) and included a recipe and where the food came from. The only thing the recipients had to do was a small amount of volunteer time on a farm and cook the delicious meal from the raw ingredients.

3. Community Bicycles

Bikes are available around campus for students to take and leave them anywhere on campus. This is run by Davidson Outdoors.

5. Eco-House

Is a house lived in by 10 Davidson students dedicated to environmental awareness and sustainability. Most food cooked in the house is organic and local. Students volunteer their time to teach a Environmental Science curriculum to local 3rd grade classes. This includes 8 lessons.
