Name: Philip Zapfel
Position (in student organization): I was, for the 2008-2009 school year, the "co-facilitator" of the Student Environmental Action Coalition. Starting on July 1, 2009, however, I will be the first full-time employee of William & Mary dedicated to sustainability. My position will be called "Sustainability Fellow" and I will function as a sustainability coordinator.

Frequency of meetings: Weekly, with five separate internal campaigns meeting weekly as well (Campus Energy, Recycling, Environmental Justice, Food Sustainability, Community Outreach)
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Outdoor recycling bins, emptied by student volunteers; placement of 3 students into paid sustainability positions in the student dining halls; creation of a campaign to oppose a new coal-fired power plant in Surry County, 10 miles south of campus; implementation of a new-student orientation program dedicated towards sustainability; members received funding for reusable takeout containers pilot project, green roof test plot, and dormitory waste bin giveaway pilot project; creation of an Eco-House (special interest on-campus housing section, 26 students living together to promote sustainable living practices); placement of over 40 student volunteers working with the new Committee on Sustainability.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: continuation of projects listed above, as well as continuation of reusable mug and CFL bulb giveaways to new students; continued management of the 2000 sq ft. campus garden; continued management of campus-wide volunteer recycle program in academic buildings; progress on working with dining services to create a sustainable food purchasing program.

SUSTAINABILITY IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT
3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[ x] Yes. Please describe: Student Assembly undersecretary for Environmental Affairs. Student government members regularly consult W&M SEAC for advice on green projects. Student Assembly has funded outdoor recycling bins, and studies for green roofs on campus.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school: introduction of a $200,000/year student green fee in spring 2008, funding a green endowment ($40k/year), student research, and facilities upgrades each year.

We work with the Sierra Student Coalition, Energy Action Coalition, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and the Wise Energy For Virginia groups tangentially.
