Name of organization: Environmental Student Organization

Number of active members: About 15

Website: people.bu.edu/eso

Date of last meeting: April 29, 2009

Frequency of meetings: Weekly

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Recycling on campus, energy use, education and awareness of both student and administrative population.

Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: There has been the formation of a sustainability committee made up of faculty, administrators, and students for the purpose of creating a unified effort towards sustainable practices such as food consumption, recycling, building, etc. More recycling has been put on campus, but that is an ongoing fight for our group.

SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES AND COMPETITIONS

2) Does your group organize any sustainability challenges/competitions for your campus and/or with other colleges?

[x ]  No

[  ]  Yes. Please list details for each competition.

SUSTAINABILITY IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT

3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[  ]  No

[x ]  Yes. Please describe: The role of Director of Environmental Affairs was added in September 2008. I took on this role in hopes to reach out to the entire student population about sustainability, not just the environmental groups. I organized all of the environmental groups to come together about once a month and discuss what they were working on, and how they could work together. I created pamphlets about what students can do to be more environmentally friendly, with tips on recycling and reducing energy use. I also reached out to other  groups on campus, looking for ways to work together. Since this was a new position this year, much of the time was spent figuring out the best ways to communicate with the student popoulation

OTHER ACTIVITIES

4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school: We hosted the Massachusetts Power Shift 2009. This brought together schools from Massachusetts such as Harvard, Tufts, and Brandeis and the surrounding states to participate in workshops, speakers, and forums on the topic of the environment, sustainability, eco-friendly living, etc. Speakers including Sen. John Kerry and Rep. Ed Marky.

We help host Earth Week every year with the other environmental groups on campus, which is a week long event is April consisting of movie screenings, forums, speakers, and an outdoor Earth Day celebration. This year we showed Wall-E, had a local activist forum, and a forum on sustainability efforts at BU.

In 2006 we began a petition to have an optional ten dollar Green fee added to students accounts. This money would go to a sustainability fund and would be used for sustainability projects on campus. The idea was to have the money saved by these sustainable practices to go back into the fund. by 2007 we had collect about 3,500 signatures and in 2008 we got the initiative passed by the Student Government. This is an ongoing project.
