STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.
Name of organization: HEAL (Helping Earth And Learning)
Number of active members: 5 team members, with around 3-5 active and regular volunteers

Date of last meeting: May 18th, 2009 was our last official HEAL team meeting; our last volunteer meeting was on May 7th, 2009.
Frequency of meetings: We have a team meeting each week, updating each other on announcements and our progress; we have volunteer meetings twice a month.
Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: We have been hard on issues pertaining to MTR, water conservation, letter campaigning.
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: The progress has been positive thus far. We successfully organized and planned a visit to an MTR site in 2008, and this past semester, HEAL sponsored an MTR event on campus that focused on the issues related, bringing in local speakers who have had experiences with coal mining. We’ve successfully installed low-flow water aerators into all of the major dorms on Berea’s campus, and have also installed low-flow showerheads into many of the dorms. Though we’ve always tabled at Berea and have encouraged letter writing, we tried out one of our first official letter-writing campaigns last semester; with over 100 letters written to local representatives on the stream saver bill and other environmental issues, we sent off several letters each week for over a month.

Year initiated: 2007
Frequency of competition: This competition only happened a few times.
Participants: Around 10 participants
Incentives: Prize money
Goal of competition: Individuals who signed up were asked to create a dress out of used and recycled materials.
Percent of energy/water/waste reduced: N/A
Lasting effects of competition: Gave people a chance a way to utilize recycled materials, as well as promoting an education of what was appropriate to recycle.

SUSTAINABILITY IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT
3) Does your student government include a specific position or committee dedicated to campus sustainability issues?

[ x ] Yes. Please describe. The Campus Environmental Policy Committee (CEPC), which monitors the progress of Berea College toward ecological sustainability- the ability to meet current needs without degrading the natural systems and resources required to meet future needs- and recommends policies and actions that will promote progress toward ecological sustainability. Another is the Green Team, which Campus Life staff and student effort to increase campus sustainability. Current efforts focus on promoting recycling in residence halls and other campus buildings.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
4) Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school: In the Fall of 2007, a proposal for real-time monitoring and equipment display was submitted by former HEAL students, and was successfully implemented in our Alumni building. In addition to this, a proposal for solar panel was passed in 2005, and was successfully installed in the Spring ’07. More recently, HEAL sponsored a portion of the Real Food Challenge, which held several events over the fall semester (Fall ’08) to increase awareness about the importance and benefits of local foods. One such event was held at our local dining services, where an entire meal was created from local foods. This was encompassed by information, tabling, and entertainment.
