1) Please describe the student-run campus environmental/sustainability organization in which you have a leadership role.

Key issues addressed and programs implemented since August 2008: Dark Dorms and RecycleMania competitions, Sustainability Pledge, Bike Share, FYS curriculum
Progress made on each issue/program since August 2008: Established Dark Dorms and RecycleMania competitions. Over 300 students signed the Babson Sustainability Pledge promising to make an effort to reduce their environmental impact. Launched a Bike Share program during the Spring semester with 75 users. In the process of developing a class period focused on sustainability for the First Year Seminar program.

#1 - Name of competition: Dark Dorms Competition           
Year initiated: 2006
Frequency of competition: Two monthly competitions during each semester
Participants: Students living on campus
Incentives: Pizza Party (monthly winner), Plasma TV for residence hall (yearly winner)
Goal of competition: Energy reduction in residence halls.
Percent of energy/water/waste reduced: For FY2008 10% reduction in participating Residence Halls
Lasting effects of competition: Aside from energy saved, our goal is make students aware their energy usage.

#2 - Name of competition: RecycleMania
Year initiated: 2008
Frequency of competition: Weekly reporting, for 10 weeks.
Participants: Students, Faculty, & Staff
Incentives: Recognition from RecycleMania organization
Goal of competition: Divert recyclable materials from waste stream.
Percent of energy/water/waste reduced:  FY2009 10.3% reduction.
Lasting effects of competition: We hope to change the habits of the entire campus community by making recycling second nature.

[X]  No. Although, The Green Tower has worked very closely with the Facilities Department as well as President Schlesinger on issues of sustainability and has a seat on the Sustainability Steering Committee.

The Babson Energy and Environmental Club (BEEC) (http://babsonenergy.com) is a graduate student organization that seeks to foster innovation by addressing the following three points:

  • Curriculum Integration
    Incorporate BEEC as part of F.W. Olin School of Management’s transition towards recognizing the triple bottom line, both through curriculum and integrated experiential learning consulting projects.
  • Career Development
    Help Babson graduates build careers in the energy and environmental sector. Build a green network for Babson Business students.
  • Campus Greening
    Propose and develop a powerful campus greening initiative to be unveiled at The Entrepreneurial Energy Expo (E3) 20089, an annual event designed to:

·         Provide insight into emerging clean energy solutions

·         Facilitate networking

·         Learn about growth opportunities within the rapidly expanding clean-tech sector

·         Connect the energy industry to the Babson community

Last year's conference attracted over 400 attendees from across the country. Over 40 companies were on hand to demonstrate their ideas and connect with industry professionals
