Administration

Overview

The Administration categor y addresses action re garding sustainability by colleges and universities at the administrative or trustee level. This includes policies or commitments to sustainability in the institution’s mission statement or master plan, as well as commitments to local, national, or international sustainability agreements.


Points are awarded to schools that have institutionalized the position of sustainability coordinator and those that have an active advisory council to guide the administration on campus sustainability. This category recognizes schools that have an office or center specifically focused on achieving campus sustainability goals, as we ll as those th at have green purchasing policies in place. Additionally, schools receive points for having a website that serves as a resource for community involvement and education on sustainability.

 

Key Findings

  • More than two-thirds of the schools have full-time staff dedicated to sustainability.  A considerable number of schools have recognized the need for full-time campus sustainability administrators. Currently, 68 percent report having dedicated sustainability staff.

 

  • Nearly half of the schools have a sustainability office.  An office or center specifically focused on achieving campus sustainability goals exists at 45 percent of the schools.

 

  • More than nine in ten schools have a website dedicated to campus sustainability. A significant number of schools (91 percent) use a website to communicate, both to the campus community and to the public, about sustainability initiatives.

 

  • More than four in five schools have a campus advisory committee on sustainability.  A large majority of the schools (88 percent) have a committee with multiple stakeholders (e.g., faculty, staff, students) that advises the administration on issues of campus sustainability.

 

  • Over half of the schools have made a carbon reduction commitment.  Increased attention to climate change is reflected at an impressive 58 percent of the schools through a commitment to carbon reduction. Fifty-two percent of the schools have signed the Presidents' Climate Commitment, while 23 percent made carbon reduction commitments in addition to, or instead of, the Presidents' Climate Commitment.

 

  • Over one-third of the schools have adopted green purchasing policies. A significant number of the schools (33 percent) have adopted robust policies for diverse types of purchasing.

 

  • Most schools (88 percent) report purchasing at least some Green Seal or Environmental Choice products.   Of these, 36 percent report purchasing all Green Seal or Environmental Choice products.

  • A total of 190 schools out of 332 (57 percent) report purchasing at least some EPEAT-certified eletronics products. Of that 190, 70 report purchasing all EPEAT-certified products, whenever available. (EPEAT is a program of the Green Electronics Council.)

 

  • An increasing number of schools have established revolving loan funds for sustainability efforts. Revolving loan funds at 16 percent of the schools encourage investment in green projects.

 

  • The average grade for the Administration category is “B.”  For a summary of grade distribution for this category, please refer to the chart on the right.
