College Sustainability Report Card 2009

President Buchanan signed the Presidents Climate Commitment and charged the Campus Sustainability Committee (CSC) with implementing actions to comply with the standards it sets forward. The CSC has completed a carbon footprint survey for the university and is developing a plan for carbon neutrality. Procurement services created a sustainable practice statement, with emphasis on procuring Energy Star-rated products.

The university has pursued energy-saving projects, such as lighting and control retrofits, and will develop a master utility plan to improve energy efficiency. Students have the option to purchase wind energy credits. The engineering college maintains a renewable energy field site to develop and demonstrate renewable energy systems.

Dining services offers organic, fair trade coffee and a reusable mug program. Food scraps are sent to the recently established campus farm to be composted. The dining services director is a member of the campus sustainability committee. The university operates a recycling program for traditional items, placing receptacles for paper and plastic in buildings, and installs exterior bins for other items.

All new construction and major renovations at the university will strive to meet LEED Silver standards. The planned renovation of the Kendall House and the remodel and expansion of the College of Business will pursue LEED Silver certification. Three more construction and renovation projects will commence in 2008–2009 that will aim to achieve LEED Silver standards or better.

The Campus Sustainability Committee employs three student interns each year and has representation from the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW). The student senate recently formed a student sustainability council to coordinate activities between all student organizations that work on sustainability issues. ASUW plans to allocate nearly $25,000 to support the activities of the council for 2008–2009.

The university and the city of Laramie have begun implementation of a greatly expanded mass transit system. The university is leasing six additional buses for the expanded routes and is constructing a fueling facility capable of fueling the bus fleet with biodiesel. The Outdoor Adventure Program and ASUW sponsor a bike library that loans bicycles to students for a nominal fee.

The university has no known policy of disclosure of endowment holdings or its shareholder voting record.

The university aims to optimize investment return and has not made any public statements about investigating or investing in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
