College Sustainability Report Card 2009

The University Energy Conservation Committee advises the physical plant on implementation of the energy efficiency policy, though there is no campus-wide sustainability policy.

The university completed energy audits on a number of campus buildings and identified many energy-saving opportunities that it plans to implement. The university is also considering purchasing some electricity from wind and hydro sources.

The new dining contract calls for vendors to address issues of sustainability. Recycling bins are located in all campus buildings for the collection of glass, plastic, metal beverage containers, newspapers, magazines, phone books, paper, and corrugated cardboard.

The university has an initiative to ensure all university renovations and new building projects participate in the LEED certification program. Currently, the university has two projects in the design phase that have the potential to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

A Go Green campaign will take place throughout a variety of existing student activities and programs. The Society of Environmental Education hosts Earthfest—an Earth Day celebration—every year. Funding has been earmarked and plans are currently in place to combine programming initiatives in order to achieve a greater impact.

The existing shuttle system will begin to offer a park-and-ride service for students, faculty, and staff starting in fall 2008; the service will reduce congestion in parking areas on campus and eliminate miles driven and fuel burned by campus members who use it. The university also uses alternative-fuel vehicles and is experimenting with three electric vehicles.
