The university has a "Buy Recycled" policy and a sustainability committee that consists of faculty, staff, students, and administrators. The committee has many working groups, including those that address transportation, energy, and water.
Climate Change & Energy

The waste reduction and recycling office implements numerous education campaigns aimed at encouraging conservation behaviors. The sustainability manager worked with a nonprofit organization to conduct a carbon inventory and plans to work with campus groups to improve information tracking.
Food & Recycling

The university spends $1.4 million annually on products sourced from 38 approved local farmers and growers. The university has a trayless cafeteria, bulk condiment dispensers, and recycled-content napkins. Dining services recycles fryer oil to create biodiesel fuel.
Green Building

The university master plan incorporates sustainable development as a guiding principle in campus design, planning, and construction. The facilities, design and construction department has incorporated green building design strategies into new construction, as well as renovation projects. These strategies include occupancy sensors, construction waste management plans, HVAC systems, compact florescent and LED lighting, and low-flow water equipment.
Student Involvement

A chapter of the Campus Climate Challenge and the student group UNC Green are active on campus. There is student representation on the university sustainability committee, and students can find paid work on campus sustainability projects through the waste reduction and recycling office.
Transportation

The university adopted a transportation master plan aimed at developing an integrated and multimodal network of transit options. Students ride for free on the local buses and the university uses B20 biodiesel and E10 gasoline-alcohol blend for all motor fleet vehicles.
