The university employs a full-time environmental sustainability manager aided by the Campus Committee on the Environment. Sustainability is noted as a priority in the university's strategic plan. Some objectives include monitoring and reducing energy and resource consumption, proper disposal of all materials used on campus and the implementation of recycling programs, purchasing green cleaning products, improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, and following LEED guidelines.
The university uses efficient scheduling of HVAC systems and has installed more than 1,000 motion-occupancy sensors, as well as premium-efficiency motors. Windows have been retrofitted and replaced, and a reflective roof is being installed. The school is planning to hire a consultant to measure its carbon footprint.
The university’s food supplier sources from 11 regional farms and contracts with a local dairy. Fair trade coffee is served. Dining services is currently investigating the use of compostable to-go containers and reusable mugs. There is a comprehensive recycling program, and dining services is aiming to begin composting this year.
LEED concepts are included in design when practical. The renovation and expansion of the Immaculate Conception Chapel is a LEED-registered project. New energy-efficient windows were recently installed in three campus buildings.
In fall 2008, a learning-living community will bring first-year students together to explore issues of sustainability, energy, and the environment. Students on campus have an active sustainability club.
The university owns a hybrid vehicle and has expanded use of electric carts for campus deliveries and maintenance. To encourage bicycling, there are a total of 58 bike rack locations on campus with room to park 344 bikes. Preferential parking for low-emission vehicles is being tested. The campus master plan includes a proposal for a greenway to connect campus pedestrians and cyclists to existing bikeways.
The university makes information on endowment holdings and proxy voting records primarily available to the school community, but also to the public. This information is sent to individuals upon request.
The university aims to optimize investment return. The university has invested in one renewal resource fund and is exploring investments in other renewable energy funds or similar investment vehicles.
A student employee votes proxies with guidelines determined by a committee of administrators.
