College Sustainability Report Card 2009

In 2008, 17 percent of the university's office supplies contained recycled content. The university has no known policy regarding campus-wide sustainability initiatives.

A new research building will be equipped with energy-saving light controls, occupancy and daylight sensors, and a building automation system to maximize efficiency. The university has not announced any plans for the use of renewable energy and has not conducted an emissions inventory or committed to reducing its emissions.

Fresh Gatherings, a restaurant in the Health Sciences Center, features locally grown food, sometimes from organic and sustainable farms, and biodegradable or recyclable food containers. Their food scraps are composted or donated to the Campus Kitchens Project, which brings leftover food from dining halls to low-income families, seniors, and youths. Plastic, glass, cardboard, and aluminum are recycled in residence halls. A paper recycling program for facilities was recently launched.

The new research building incorporates energy-efficient features such as lighting controls, daylight sensors, and a reflective coating on its roof. This building, as well as the new Chaifetz Arena, was built to LEED standards.

Students may get involved with sustainability on campus through the Environmental Task Force, a committee of the student government, and the Just Earth! group, a part of the social justice cabinet. The Campus Kitchens Program also offers internships. The university celebrated Campus Sustainability Day in October 2007, during which the sustainability efforts of the campus community were showcased.

A shuttle service is offered on campus, but the university has not made public any major programs or practices that encourage or facilitate the use of public or alternative forms of transportation.

The university has no known policy of disclosure of endowment holdings or its shareholder voting record.

The university aims to optimize investment return and has not made any public statements about investigating or investing in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
