President Ray signed the Presidents Climate Commitment. In November 2005, a sustainability office was formed and a full-time sustainability coordinator was hired. In December 2007, an additional half-time position was created.

The university has completed a greenhouse gas inventory, which it plans to update annually in the future. Subsidized by a student fee, OSU purchases 75 percent of its power from renewable sources, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by about 50 percent.

OSU is a member of the Oregon Food Alliance, which supports sustainable agriculture practices. Dining services purchases hormone-free and grass-fed Oregon beef, as well as local eggs, dairy, produce and baked goods. Campus has been Styrofoam-free for 16 years. OSU has an extensive recycling program.

The university has a green building policy, which states that all future capital construction will aim for LEED Silver standards or higher. The Kelley Engineering Center is LEED Gold-certified and a residence hall has also been LEED-certified. The school's stadium was constructed according to LEED criteria, but has not been certified.

The Student Sustainability Initiative, which is funded by student fees, provides seed money for campus projects, funds student workers, and maintains a student sustainability center. Residence halls have representatives responsible for environmental education.

The university has 12 hybrid vehicles in the campus fleet for intercity travel and 17 electric vehicles for use within the city of Corvallis. Sustainability principles are integrated into the OSU campus master plan.

The OSU Foundation makes a list of endowment holdings available to trustees, senior administrators, and other select members of the school community. Reports are made available to the Investment Committee of the board of trustees on a regular basis, and all trustees have access to the information upon request. The foundation does not make its shareholder voting record public.

The OSU Foundation aims to optimize investment return and is exploring, but not currently invested in, renewable energy funds or similar investment vehicles. The foundation reviews its investment holdings on a quarterly basis and considers environmental and sustainability factors when hiring investment managers. The foundation is exploring, but not currently invested in, community development loan funds. However, the foundation does have options available for donors who are interested in directing gifts to an investment fund that considers environmental and sustainability factors.
