President Martin signed the Presidents Climate Commitment. The NMSU Sustainability and Climate Change Task Force maintains a website informing the campus community about programs, initiatives, and general information on sustainability. The task force includes faculty, staff, and student representation.
Energy efficiency projects on campus include the use of a cogeneration plant for power, steam and chilled water loops, and energy audits. The campus greenhouse gas emissions inventory is not yet complete.

To reduce waste, an active surplus property office reallocates old furniture and equipment throughout campus.
As part of the Presidents Climate Commitment, the university is requiring that all new construction and major renovations meet LEED Silver standards, at a minimum. Three building projects currently underway will achieve LEED Silver certification.
The Sustainability and Climate Change Task Force works closely with NMSU's student government on outreach efforts and planning conservation initiatives. The campus recycling department has worked with student environmental groups to examine and implement recycling programs.
Electric and hybrid vehicles running on biodiesel or ethanol-blended gasoline now make up 14 percent of the light-duty vehicle fleet. NMSU established an expanded on-campus shuttle system funded by student fees. The shuttle connects passengers to the Las Cruces transit system.
