President Hochstettler signed the Presidents Climate Commitment, and the university is a signatory to the Talloires Declaration. The Lewis & Clark Sustainability Council, made up of students, faculty, and staff, works to promote sustainability within the college's administrative agenda.
The college has charted its greenhouse gas emissions annually since 2000. The college purchases more than 4 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, offsetting one-third of the school's annual electricity use. In summer 2008, the college installed solar panels on its sports facility that will generate 97,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
The college sources food from 22 local farms, including a dairy. It also purchases fair trade bananas, no-till wheat flour, cage-free eggs, and organic milk, produce, and tofu. The college provides biodegradable and compostable to-go containers, and composts 70 tons of waste per year.
Lewis & Clark College has made a commitment to integrate environmentally responsible development practices into its construction program. The college has two LEED Silver and one LEED Gold-certified buildings.
Students have been instrumental in many campus sustainability initiatives. A student-created, opt-in fee funds the college's purchase of renewable energy offsets. Focus the Nation, the nationwide day of campus and student cooperation for climate change solutions, originated at Lewis & Clark.
Lewis & Clark offers free shuttle service, discounted parking for carpools, and discount transit passes. The college's environmental framework plan integrates green campus planning into institutional development.
