College Sustainability Report Card 2009

The Associate Vice President/Director of the physical plant department is actively involved in sustainability efforts, and the senior staff at the college is currently discussing the formation of a sustainability committee. However, Hendrix College has no policy relating to campus-wide sustainability initiatives.

The college is currently undergoing a yearlong project to enhance campus energy efficiency through a cooling loop retrofit. Campus dorms are heated and cooled by geothermal technology, and many inefficient lighting fixtures on campus have been replaced. Windows have also been retrofitted in order to reduce heat transfer.

The college runs a recycling program that accepts glass and cardboard. The Hendrix Food Program is an initiative to trace the origins of cafeteria food, examine its local environmental impacts, and explore possible local and/or organic alternatives. However, the university’s dining services department does not yet offer any notable amount of local or organic food.

The new fitness center, as well as the student life and technology center, was built to LEED standards. The college anticipates that the latter will be LEED Silver-certified. The Village at Hendrix is a neighborhood adjacent to the campus that provides housing for students and faculty.

Student groups include the Environmental Concerns Committee and Student Activities that Value the Earth. There is also a themed living program, Eco-House, through which students engage in sustainability projects throughout the year. The campus recycling program started as a student-led initiative that is now supported by the physical plant department.

Hendrix College is a small, walkable campus. There is a community bike program at the college. One public safety departmental vehicle is a golf cart and many of the vehicles used by physical plant personnel are mini-trucks that are more environmentally friendly than a fleet of small pick-up trucks. With the addition of The Village at Hendrix, additional points of interest for students such as restaurants, pharmacies, grocery stores, and other shopping opportunities will be available within walking distance.

The college makes neither its proxy voting record nor its list of endowment holdings public.

The college aims to optimize investment return and does not invest in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.

The college asks that its investment managers handle the details of proxy voting.
