President Weisbuch signed the Presidents Climate Commitment. Drew University hired a sustainability coordinator in 2008 and has a sustainability committee that meets frequently to work toward best practices and community awareness and education.
Through efficiency upgrades, Drew has reduced energy use by 4.4 percent within the last year. Steps that the university has taken include the installation of occupancy sensors, retrofitting to compact fluorescent lightbulbs, the establishment of setbacks, and upgrading controls.
Dining services buys produce from 10 to 12 local farms and is part of the New Jersey Fresh and Madison 35 programs. A farm stand is hosted on campus once a week and the university offers fair trade, organic coffee. The university's comprehensive recycling program has a waste diversion rate of approximately 45 percent. All landscaping waste is composted and used as mulch on campus.
A residence hall scheduled for completion in 2009 is expected to achieve a LEED Silver rating. Renovations include high-efficiency windows, recycled building materials, and Energy Star appliances. The university has no green building policy.
Sustainability was part of new student orientation in fall 2008. There are active student environmental groups on campus including Drew Environmental Action League and a theological environmental student group. As a prerequisite for living in eco-focused housing, students must establish environmental awareness programming for the student body.
Drew has instituted a free bike-sharing program for all students, and public transportation is accessible by foot. There is a car-sharing program present on campus, and facilities uses seven electric carts.
The university makes a list of endowment holdings available to all members of the school community, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni. This information is sent to individuals upon request. Drew does not make its shareholder voting record public.
The university aims to optimize investment return and does not invest in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
The university provides its investment managers with guidelines that determine its proxy votes.
