Ball State University

President Gora signed the Presidents Climate Commitment in December 2006. The 2002 University Sustainability Statement commits the university "to protect and enhance the environment." The Council on the Environment leads sustainability initiatives, and is composed of faculty, staff, students, and community members.

The university continuously upgrades its systems and facilities for increased energy efficiency and purchases Energy Star-rated appliances. The university recently completed a carbon emissions inventory.

Thirty percent of food purchases are from local sources, and dining services offers fair trade coffee and a variety of organic produce and baked goods. Freshmen are provided with a free reusable shopping bag, and vendors offer discounts to patrons who bring a reusable beverage container. BSU operates a comprehensive recycling program.

The university requires LEED Silver certification for all new construction. Two campus buildings are currently seeking certification. Renovations must consider seeking LEED certification, as well.

Students for a Sustainable Campus hosted Focus the Nation, Step It Up, RecycleMania, and sponsors a sustainability graduation pledge. The group is working with dining services to increase recycling and sustainability practices in dining halls. Dining services promotes its less-waste program at orientation.

The majority of the Ball State fleet is either hybrid or E85- or biodiesel-fueled. The university also operates six hybrid buses as part of their campus shuttle service.

The Ball State University Foundation's investment holdings and proxy voting record are available only to members of the foundation board.

The Ball State University Foundation aims to optimize investment return and is currently invested in renewable energy funds.
